Are you choosing how to answer this question all by your lonesome, or was your response — and everything else you’ll ever do — determined long ago?

The idea of free will has been debated since the Ancient Greeks took up the issue, if not earlier, and we don’t seem any closer to figuring it out. Perhaps that’s because it’s unknowable — how could it ever be proven one way or another whether we’re all walking a set path or making it up as we go along? There’s comfort to be had in both sides of the coin, with some preferring the idea that everything happens for a reason and others choosing to believe they control the levers of their destiny.
