What used to be the standard way to drive has now become a rarefied skill. Motorists of a certain age probably outpace their younger counterparts when it comes to driving stick, as automatic transmissions didn’t reach widespread popularity until the 1970s. Since then, however, they’ve become something close to the default — most people don’t learn manual unless they have to or are automotive enthusiasts. It still has its benefits — the cars themselves are often cheaper and may get better gas mileage — but they’re not necessarily the kind that your average commuter will be too excited about.
