We’ve all got places to be and things to do, but some of us are in more of a rush than others.
It can be nice to take a quick break when you’re on the escalator, not that time always allows for it — which is why it’s a good thing escalators are wide enough for both options. Just as crucial a question is whether you move to the right when standing so that anyone trying to walk (or even run) up/down the escalator can do so without being impeded — a custom that tends to be more widely practiced in dense cities with lots of public-transit commuters.
