The former rolls off the tongue more naturally for most of us, an especially important consideration when it comes to candy, while the latter seems more proper — even if you don’t pronounce it that way, there’s a chance you wish you did. Maybe it depends on the setting in which said caramel is being consumed: CAR-mull if it’s a candy bar bought from the grocery store, KER-uh-mell if you’re at a fancy dinner party drinking tea with your pinky up.
