Comfort or courtesy: the eternal conflict when stuck in an airplane seat for five hours.

Most of us would prefer to lean our seat back, but we’d also prefer not to have the person in front of us lean theirs back; the prospect of an awkward social interaction might be the most stressful of all. The question thus becomes whether we’d rather be the change we want to see in the world and politely ask the passenger behind us if they mind or just lean back and hope they won’t say anything — or, worse, passively aggressively kick the seat. The discomfort (whether social or physical) will all be over once you’ve safely arrived at your final destination, but that doesn’t mean you won’t have baggage in the form of an awkward memory.
