We all know when the afternoon begins, but the part of the day that comes after is a bit more nebulous.
Does it change depending on the time of year and have to do with how close the sun is to setting, for instance, or is it at a fixed time every day? Evening in the summer certainly *feels* different from evening in the winter, but that doesn’t necessarily mean the actual start time is different. The fact that “good evening” is a greeting and “goodnight” also seems relevant, as well as a reminder that all of this is somewhat arbitrary anyway.
